About YardBits |
|
Let me take a minute to tell you about me and why yardbits is here.
My Childhood
I remember the summer of 1980, riding in the car with my mother, newspaper in hand. The list of small ads for yard sales seemed endless as we drove from one place to another. This was a necessity as money was tight and there were three of us kids to find clothes for. It is a memory that stuck with me.
Daydreaming for a purpose
Fast forward to 2004. I am living in a community that holds a yearly yard sale event for everyone to join in on. This year, for reasons unknown to me, the sale was cancelled. I had items that were ready to go and I thought to myself, “There has to be another way”.
I thought it would be nice to have an online portal for the residents to use to sell, buy or trade our items that no longer had a use for us. I sat back and thought, as I do so often, and that is when the idea for yardbits was born.
The BuildI did nothing with this idea until 2006. I built the site but had too many problems to conquer and I was never happy with the layout. It’s not easy building a site having the options that I wanted. I became frustrated and closed the site. From that time until now a few things have happened. My daughter nagged me countless times to rebuild the site and I told her I would. Also, a recent trip to visit family touched me when I saw the recycling efforts of my Uncle. It takes dedication for your trash to end up in eight different bins.
I thought “What could I do?”. “Maybe, I could help the good ‘Ole USA recycle itself”.
My AnswerDoesn’t it make sense to buy from your neighbors? To keep your money local and not in the hands of huge corporations? To limit what we buy from other countries? I am not a big company. I am not a web designer. I am just your ordinary, blue collar worker living next door with a small idea that I hope will help in a big way.
